- Don Hoellein <don@hoellein.riva.com> started us off with:
-
- : My dad has a C64, and the monitor has died. He's been told that there are
- : none made anymore that are compatible. Is this true? He lives in
- : Montana, so his local options are limited. Any suggestions on where to
- : find a replacement?
-
- Then Chip Pieroni (ppieroni@ppse.win-uk.net) chipped in (sorry!):
-
- : Any color monitor that can accept a Composite video
- : input can operate with the C64. I bought my monitor from
- : an old bank security system, soldered a connection with a
- : Five pin DIN Plug, and hey presto - NO MORE EYE STRAIN OR
- : HEADACHES! (better quality than TV too !)
-
- This is very easy, as Chip said, but a word of warning. SOME monitors are
- better suited than others. A friend of mine, Ozz, did a similar thing with
- three monitors he got when a local firm upgraded something or other (security
- system I think). He wired them to a C64 and they seemed happy. Later that
- day (the next morning in fact) he and another friend, Sean, got back and
- fired a C64 up to play Delta (this was about '88!).
-
- Ozz went to sleep and Sean played for half an hour or so. Then there was a
- whining from the monitor and the screen shrank about a centimetre. Sean
- woke Ozz and said "theres something wrong!". Ozz said "nah, it'll settle!"
- and went back to sleep. Sean kept going and the whine got louder and the
- screen smaller, until it was about 1/4 of normal size vertically. Sean woke
- Ozz again and he said "Och (they are both Scots!) I'll have a look," at which
- point the picture snapped the rest of the distance to the middle, the whine
- went up an octave and two seconds later there was a bang and smoke poured
- out of the monitor!
-
- Now, this is a RARE occurance (all three of these monitors died in the same
- manner) but I tell this story for two reasons:
-
- 1) PLEASE make SURE that the monitor don't mind having a C64 on it. There
- are some custom CVBS monitors that don't I've heard.
-
- and
- 2) Its a funny story! (but true!)
-
- So please be wary!

- Jason (who just advises using a BIG TV if you want a clear picture!! =-)
